Summing It Up

8 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

There is a caveat to “no condemnation.” You MUST make the effort to follow Jesus in Word and deed. You can’t continue to live in sin, regardless of how much you pray. Sin must be left behind. You must follow the leading of the Holy Spirit. You must see yourself dead in Him. You must want to please Him more than anything else.

2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.

The reason for the caveat: the supernatural experience of life in Christ has freed me from the law of sin and subsequent death. I no longer must live in sin, separated from God.

3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:

The law showed me where I stood with God—condemned. The law doesn’t save; it always condemns. But Jesus died in my place, bearing the lawful punishment owed to me. He broke the power of sin off of me and set me free from the prison cell of sin on death row that I was in.

4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

Again, a caveat: the law won’t condemn me if I follow Christ and stop sinning against Him.

5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.

Do I demand my own way? Then I am living and obeying my flesh and not Christ. Do I make excuses for sin? Then I am not following Christ. I must be born again; then I will be connected to the Holy Spirit and I must obey what He says. I can’t have it both ways. You can’t be in prison and out of prison at the same time.

6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

In prison I have no life. I have no peace. It’s torment. But to follow Jesus—denying self, obeying, being free from sin—brings me joy, peace, and hope.

7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

Another caveat! If you are not born again, you are carnal. You can’t see or hear in the Spirit. You can’t understand the things of God. You are an enemy to God. You are dead in sin.

8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

Pray all you want; God is holy and just, and He only hears the prayer of repentance from the sinner trapped in his sin.

9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

Caveat again! You’re either dead or alive. You can think you’re alive, but you’re really dead. If you’re habitually living and choosing to live in sin, you don’t know Christ. You can be a good person in the eyes of the world and still be an enemy of God.

10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

Your body is dead to sin. He literally takes the desire to sin away. You won’t fight Him to keep living in sin apart from Him. You will hear in your spirit, commune with Him in your spirit, and long for Him in your spirit.

11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

Here’s where the victory comes! Yielding to Christ, reckoning yourself dead, allows Him to do the work needed in you.

12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.

You don’t have to obey the flesh anymore! You now have power over sin. You don’t owe the world, or your flesh, or sin anything anymore!

13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

Caveat again. It’s your choice. Live to satisfy your best life now, apart from Christ, and live the next life apart from Him as well.

14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

You will hear from the Spirit if you follow Jesus. He will speak through the Word and in your spirit.

15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

A believer calls on the Father in faith, knowing He hears.

16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

A believer knows and understands the blood of Christ has saved them from sin and separation from God. Peace enters your heart.

17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

Like a family, we are in the family of God. We suffer with the family as well as enjoying the good times. But a family sticks together.

18 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.

I count the sufferings as being a part of the family and worth the glory that awaits me.

19 For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.

All that was created longs for the day when it will be redeemed.

20 For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope,
Nature fell with man but hopes in God for the day of restoration.

21 Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.

All that was created will one day be delivered from its bondage and be reunited with God.

22 For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.

We long with all that was created for Jesus to come.

23 And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.

Believers long for the day and hope that it’s today. The world has no hold on the believer.

24 For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for?

We hope looking into the future.
25 But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.
We wait patiently, knowing what the Word says.

26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

Oh, thank you Holy Spirit for helping us, leading us, speaking to us.

27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

The Spirit prays to the Father on our behalf.

28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

Being in the family of God ensures we are cared for, provided for, and loved. God wants us to succeed in Him.

29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.

God calls ALL people to know Him through His Son and be saved, but He knows who will and who won’t choose.

30 Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.

He helps those who choose to know Him.

31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?

No one!

32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?

What great love!

33 Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth.

God is the believer’s judge.

34 Who is he that condemneth

God is the believer’s judge.

34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.

Oh, thank you, Jesus, that you died for me, and that you forever make intercession for me with the Father. I don’t deserve the life I have!

35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

When your hope is in Him, nothing can come between you as long as you focus on Him.

36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.

The world hates us. We have a fight with our flesh, but keep your focus on Him!

37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.

He gives us overcoming power.

38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,

Glory awaits us no matter what happens here.

39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Nothing can steal us away from Jesus.

Summing it all up
From David, our church member in Germany, and our friend:
Yes, I just read Romans 6–8, and it was really good, showing how Paul went through that process of realizing that he can’t walk the straight and narrow if his object of faith is anything apart from Christ’s finished work at Calvary. We get reminded of that daily too, which is great. I think everyone has had that one phase where you truly discover that you cannot do it in your own strength—it will never work, because God can’t honor that. That would be like saying the Cross was for nothing and unnecessary.
I had to learn that recently with those stupid video games, but now, thank God, I’m back onto the straight and narrow. It taught me a huge lesson as well about how terrible it is to be at home and not working, and not doing what you know you should do!

Blessings
