Why Wine?

Read a great account of Jesus turning water into wine in the book Signs and Secrets of the Messiah; A Fresh Look At The Miracles of Jesus by Rabbi Jason Sobel. The event took place at a wedding. So many incredible points to this story, but the first key is that it was a wedding. A wedding because Israel is married to God, although committing adultery. The Church is engaged to Jesus, and the Marriage Supper of the Lamb soon to come! “Yeshua was giving the guests the taste of the marriage supper of the Lamb, when the good wine would be served. It was a sneak preview of the abundant life to come.”

In the Jewish mindset wine symbolizes joy and abundance. Children start early drinking wine in religious tradition with their families. Wine is the drink of choice for Jews and among the 3 major religions they have the least teetotalers.

20% of Jews have the ADH2*2 gene, that protects against heavy drinking. In fact Jews are the smallest percentage of any people group to be alcoholics, 1%.

“Many Jewish traditions involve alcohol. We condemn actual drunkenness. Jews drink wine more than any other group. Few alcohol abusers concentrate on wine.” Said one Jewish person.

“Drinking has just never entered as an activity. It’s part of a thing like eating. It’s ok with foods. It goes, to me, along with eating.” Quote of a Jewish school teacher.

Is that why Jesus turned water into wine?

Blessings
