The Land

The Land

In Joshua chapter 15, the land for the tribe of Judah is laid out meticulously. Judah had the largest portion of land given to them by God. As I was reading the boundaries, one of which bordered Egypt, thinking that God had given it to them, but subsequently lost it because of sin. Thousands of years later they were back in the land. But this time they did not conquer the land, they purchased the land!

Right now Egypt is positioned near the Syrian border and it is believed that while Israel is pre-occupied, they will attack Israel. All the lands surrounding Israel say Israel has no rights to be there because they differ religiously. But the Jews began buying land before WW1, in the 1880’s to be exact. This continued until in 1948, when they had purchased enough to have a nation.

Wealthy Arab land owners are the ones that sold the dry, dessert land at a premium. They themselves chose to sell! The Ottoman Empire who controlled the area until after WW1, also sold large swaths to Jewish groups. It wasn’t just the good land they bought either. They purchased swamp land, bad dry land, any land that was offered. Actually none of it was very good. Mark Twain visiting there said this: A desolate country whose soil is rich enough, but is given over wholly to weeds... a silent mournful expanse.... a desolation.... we never saw a human being on the whole route.... hardly a tree or shrub anywhere. Even the olive tree and the cactus, those fast friends of a worthless soil, had almost deserted the country." (The Innocents Abroad, p. 361-362) (I personally read the book)

God had blessed and prepared them financially to do so, just as He always had. If someone came today and said you shouldn’t own that house you live in and that driveway you park your car on, because they want the house and land. Would that be ok with you? After all you bought it!
