What Is It About Age?

What Is It About Age?

What is it about age that divides us? My first job was at a nursing home at 15 years old. On day one I saw things that a  15 year old  today would go commit suicide over! I had one very old lady that I really took to and enjoyed seeing her on a regular basis. One morning I walked in and she was not there, her bed already stripped and I knew without asking she had died in the night. I was crushed.

Today young people have no desire and no respect for older people just like them that have lived life and over come it. They aren’t even curious how they did overcome it!

The last time we went up North, we visited a pastor friends church. We got there for Sunday School and it consisted of three very old men. My husband abandoned me to go talk to his pastor friend. I was a little uncomfortable being a woman there with these men and their ages did cross my mind, but I participated and shared and by the end, I was very blessed, more so than being in the church service! But why did the age even cross my mind? Why does age matter?

A few scriptures come to mind that tell me that age has always mattered in our fallen and broken state. 1) Listen to your father who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old. Prov 23:22 and 2) The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children Titus 2:3

God knew there was going to be an age problem and he addressed it, encouraging the ages to mix and the young to learn from the old, but maybe like never before the old are marginalized and disrespected. I remember a time with the old were revered and honored. Today 60+ is said to be ready to be euthanized. I would love to see how quickly these young people, with this Nazi view, come to the realization that their lives are done and they themselves seemingly overnight are 60!

Separating the ages is not God’s way. Everyone has a story and God expects us to share it, but today who will listen? I see very few young people sharing testimonies on any Christian podcasts, because they have no story yet! It’s the ones that have great life experiences, great exploits with God, people who have overcome great hardship that have all the great stories, but the devil hides them from the poorly developed mind of youth, blinding them to the great wisdom and knowledge of experience. They turn their prideful noses up at age, looking to ignorant peers for advice.

Age shouldn’t matter, but more than ever today, it matters greatly. Just remember young person, you are young today and tomorrow you will be old. What you do will be done to you! God will not look kindly on disrespecting His bride. I would think twice before you insult one of God’s own, in your deceitful youthful pride and arrogance. You have absolutely no guarantee you will live tomorrow.

Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” 1 pet 5:5

You shall stand up before the gray head and honor the face of an old man, and you shall fear your God: I am the Lord. Lev 19:32

Wisdom is with the aged, and understanding in length of days. Job 12:12

Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching. 1 Tim 5:17

Maybe young person you to to rethink your stance. If not you  may find your at enmity with God!

Blessings
