Old Leprosy or New Leprosy

Have you ever wondered why Jesus told the leper that He healed, “to go and show yourself to the priest?”Why? What for? I wondered that.

Well, first of all Jesus puts away man-kinds doubt, (yours and mine), that He truly wants to heal us. He does NOT pick and choose who gets healed and don’t let the devil bring people to your mind, to doubt! He NEVER told anyone healing was not for them! Once this Truth is established, the healing is pronounced and immediately manifests (in the story). Then Jesus says to the man, “Go and show yourself to the priest, and make an offering for your cleansing, as a testimony to them, just as Moses commanded"

Jesus was under the Law of God. He came to fulfill it, not do away with it. God laid out strict instructions to Moses about lepers, Lev. 14, that Jesus intended to follow. It showed the importance of the priest as mediator, which Jesus would also fulfill. But were there any lepers healed prior to Jesus? Miriam comes to mind, she would have followed this protocol. I’m sure there were more but Jesus came with healing in His wings, and healed lepers and others as mentioned in Isaiah 35:5-6.

A healed leper had to offer a sacrifice, a payment, not for his healing, but for his defilement! He offered a thanksgiving offering I’m sure for the healing, to show thankfulness and to testify to others, as well. So the animal paid for his sickness, no matter how he got it. *More often, the idea of atonement concerns cleansing a person who has sinned or become defiled in some way: for a woman after childbirth (Leviticus 12:8), a leper who had been healed (Leviticus 14:18–19), or a Nazirite who had broken his vows, even accidentally (Numbers 6:11).

Jesus did this very thing for us, ALL of us who believe and expect that this is the way it works. We have regular healings amongst the people at our church, but we also have some heath issues that have been with us for years, “old leprosy” and I intend to see us all healed of those, because old leprosy or new leprosy was atoned for at Calvary’s Cross! Stay tuned!

Blessings
