Controlling Fear

I read an article in Shooting Illustrated entitled Overriding Your Instincts. The article was about controlling your fear. Today fear is epidemic. No, people don’t call it fear, they call it anxiety, but it’s really fear.

The article explains the difference between fear and being afraid. “Fear is temporary, like being scared or startled. It happens to everyone.” It reminded me of when we were first married and we lived in a building containing 4 apartments with a full basement that ran the length of the building underneath. The washer and dryer were in the basement. Each end was in the dark, all but where the washer and dryer stood, under one lone lightbulb. I was down there and my new husband thought it would be fun to scare me. He came rushing down the stairs to the basement, where I had just begun to go up. If I remember correctly, he barreled down them making some kind of noise and my reaction to the fear was to crumple to the floor and cry! This is exactly what the article was saying that we must train ourselves NOT to do.

The Word of God tells us the same thing. “Do not be afraid”, it tells us over and over again. The only way you are not going to be afraid as evil ramps up its deadly agenda to take over the world, is to be so grounded in the Word, to be so familiar with God’s promises, to know that God is for you and not against you, or else you too will find yourself crumpled to the floor in a heaving ball of tears, with no hope of survival. While there is time, maybe even just days, start preparing for the evil the Bible says is coming and get the Word in you, so that you will be able to stand in that day.

Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Eph 6:13

That’s how you overcome anxiety, which is nothing more than fear, and control your fear instead of fear controlling you.

Blessings
