Who’s To Blame?

Years ago, we used to take a lady in our church home afterwards. She lived in Atlanta where my husband was Associate Pastor. She was a tiny little lady and she was blind. We would go in, for she insisted and it was amazing to watch her function quite well, although blind. She would make us stay while she cooked us something, and we politely ate what she fixed. She never told us how she went blind that I can recall, but years later I wondered if it was cataracts. Could her blindness have  been a result of ignorance? Could she have had a simple cataract surgery and been able to see? It’s a thought.

How many souls do we talk to on a daily basis that are blind? No, not blind in their physical eyes, but blind to their Creator and their eternal future; blind in their spiritual eyes. Our friend learned to live and function blind, possibly due to ignorance, but Hell is going to be full of ignorant people who CHOSE to be blind.

So many choosing to go through life blind. But whose fault is that? Who’s fault is it that your blind? The doctor went to medical school to learn how to fix your blindness. Is it his fault that you don’t care enough to make an appointment to see him? He and his diploma, his medical license are waiting, but you won’t believe. You accept your blindness. Is the doctor to blame?

In January of 1986 the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded with 7 people in it. The first ever civilian, a teacher from New Hampshire was aboard, chosen from 1400+ applicants. Knowing the risk, she died.

President Ronald Regan on the night of the disaster, addressed the nation, for everyone was interested and had been watching the lift off that day, because of the first civilian in space.

President Regan in his suave demeanor said this, “We will never forget them, nor the last time we saw them, this morning, as they prepared for their journey and waved goodbye and slipped the surly bonds of earth to touch the face of God.”

One morning, one afternoon, one evening, we will all leave for our journey. We too will “slip the surly bonds of earth to touch the face of God.” What will your excuse be?  “I was blind! I didn’t know! I was sick! I was busy!” While all along He called you. Beckoned you. Gave you His Word, His thoughts, His feelings. Sent His Son to save you, but you blinded yourself to Him and simply ignored the Truth. A willful choice of blindness. Is He to blame?
