Some people think they don’t need to read the Word because they have the Spirit. Some people think they don’t need the Spirit because they have the Word. Which is it?
It’s BOTH! Jesus commanded His followers to wait until the Holy Spirit was sent. He said “Be ye filled with the Holy Spirit.” Eph 5:18 Or in other words, “You be filled with the Holy Spirit like I was filled.”
And in Psalm 138:2b we learn the importance of the Word of God. “….for You have exalted above all else Your name, and Your word, and You have magnified Your word above all your name!”
We need both!!! I had an experience where the Holy Spirit spoke to me THEN led me to ask for a Word in confirmation of what the Spirit just spoke. I went to the Word, began reading where I had left off, and there was the confirmation of what the Spirit said! The physical circumstances had not changed and looked terrible, but I had heard the Spirit of God AND received confirmation in the Word. I KNEW that it was done, and was not swayed by what I could see!
The Lord Himself was filled without measure of the Holy Spirit, John 3:34 AND He knew, quoted, and read the Word. Do you really think you don’t need both? If it was good enough for Jesus, it’s good enough for me!
The Spirit gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life. John 6:63
