A Seat At The Table
King David sought out Mephibosheth, Saul’s grandson, not to kill him, as would be expected, but rather to bless him! And it wasn’t because Mephibosheth was lame in his feet that David was kind to him. Kings would have all the family and servants and any one loyal to the former king killed, to protect themselves from retaliation. Mephibosheth might not have been physically able to come against David himself, but he could have rallied support for his cause and tried to over throw David, because technically he should have been king! He was the only living heir of Saul and that made him in line to be king, but he didn’t go after the throne and he honored David, and David honored him and his postion as the former kings grandson, and his best friends son. David took him into his home and set him up for the rest of his life and took him into his family. It’s just another amazing story in the Bible that we need to learn from. It should bring us comfort that God brings us into His family through Jesus. God will take care of you and provide for you all the days of your life, as apart of His family, and then the best is yet to come!
I was thinking about our dear brother and friend Jim, Jennifer’s dad who died during Covid. We miss him. He was apart of our family. But watch this! He chose to move here to be with Jennifer, but then he chose to be apart of me and Jeff. He hung out with us. He went everywhere we went as a family. We expected him to always be with us. He started coming to church just to be with Jennifer. Not because he wanted to come to church! But by coming to church and by being apart of our family, he learned about the Lord, and gave his heart to the Lord some where along the line, we aren’t sure. But a litteral moment before his last breath, the Lord told James that “Jim was with Him”, and had that not happened, we would have not known for sure.
My point is, Jim had to accept what we offered. We offered him to be one of us and he accepted. But sometimes people don’t accept! They don’t want to be apart. Mephibosheth could have rejected David, Jim could have rejected us. We can reject Christ offer to be apart of His family. Do I understand it when this happens? No! Is in painful? Yes! But we are born in the image of God and we have a free will and we get to choose. We litteraly are offered a place at THE King’s table but we don’t have to accept.
