Taking The Mystery Out of Tongues

For many, the topic of speaking in tongues has long been shrouded in mystery—and even fear. But the truth is, Scripture lays it out with clarity and power. If we simply turn to the Word, especially Acts 2, we’ll find that it’s not confusing at all—it’s miraculous.

During the feast of Pentecost, a celebration ordained by God, Jews from every corner of the Roman Empire gathered in Jerusalem. These pilgrims spoke a variety of languages, according to where in the empire they were born. Among them were both believers in Christ and those still seeking, as well as scoffers.

Then something extraordinary happened. The believers—Galileans known for their distinct accent—were gathered together when suddenly, “a rushing mighty wind… filled all the house where they were sitting.” Then, as everyone watched, fire appeared and rested on each of them, but didn’t burn them. The Holy Spirit filled them, and the evidence was undeniable: they began declaring the marvelous works of God—not in their native tongue, but in languages they had never learned.

Why? Because this was a sign—not for themselves, but for the unbelievers present. I counted 15 different languages spoken that day! The crowd was stunned. Some scoffed, accusing them of being drunk. But Peter stood up and boldly explained: this was the fulfillment of the prophecy spoken by Joel—that God would pour out His Spirit on all flesh.

Peter didn’t stop there. He told the crowd that this gift wasn’t reserved for a select few. Anyone—yes, anyone—could repent, be baptized, and receive the Holy Spirit. This wasn’t a spectacle. It was the beginning of a new reality: walking in power, filled with the Spirit of the Living God. Power to help you live a pleasing life unto Him and boldness to tell others.

So no, tongues isn’t something to fear. It’s not a mystery. It’s a divine invitation to experience God in a deeper, supernatural way.

Will you say yes to Him today?

Blessings
