“When I used to run marathons, I had a training partner who would say to me, at the most horrific moments, usually at about mile 20, "Rosaria, this could be the best moment of your life." I thought this man was certifiably nuts, a DSM-IV special.”
That was a quote from an excellent book every Christian should read, An Unlikely Convert by Rosaria Champagne Butterfield. A former PHd, professor at Syracuse University, a lesbian and an activists on steroids! Her story is nothing short of an absolute miracle. Having lived in a committed same-sex relationship, taught queer theory, and actively supported LGBTQ+ causes—including helping Syracuse University pass its domestic partnership policy, teaching the subject, and speaking at gay pride parades, got saved and still was not sure homosexuality was a sin.
But back to the quote by her marathon trainer partner, he was absolutely right. When you think your life is over, when you’re up against the wall and all hope is lost, you think your going to lose the Marathon…..
“So I find myself, in life's most unbearable moments, in and out of the class-room, saying, "This may be the best moment of my life." At first, this makes me feel, perhaps too viscerally, that I am on mile 20 of the marathon and I'm about to throw up. And then it reminds me that even if I do throw up, I still have a marathon to finish, and something extraordinary will happen in the process of focusing on the rigor and simplicity of putting one foot in front of the next.”
What happens is while you’re not looking, God is working. He’s pushing you on. He knows the battle is how you win the war. So today, ask God to work while you’re not looking! Read Romans 8:28 and know these tough times can be the greatest times.
Blessings
